Changing Perspectives. Changing Lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y operates under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As Maryland's largest volunteer  mentoring network, we make meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in Baltimore City and the five surrounding counties. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

With the help of our volunteer mentors, partners, donors, funders and families, we provide children facing adversity strong and enduring professionally  supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.  Together, we are responsible for helping each mentee achieve:

  • Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
  • Avoidance of risky behaviors
  • Educational success

Here's the proof.

National research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By participating in our programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

  • 90% show improved self confidence
  • 90% are able to get along better with their families
  • 93% are more likely to avoid substance abuse
  • 84% are more likely to avoid delinquency
  • 93% are more likely to show trust towards you

Could Your Little One Use A Big?

It all starts with the right role models.  For over 100 years, we’ve been able to recruit, screen, match and support mentoring relationships that have changed the lives of tens of thousands of young people across our community — one child at a time.

You’ll feel the impact as much as your child. A study for Big Brothers Big Sisters found that kids matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister:

  • are more confident
  • are more likely to steer clear of drugs and alcohol
  • do better in school
  • get along better with their family and friends

Offering mentoring for employees is both a great way to demonstrate your support of the community and a wonderful employee benefit that’s easy to offer and increases workplace health and well-being. We offer many opportunities for your organization to support mentoring as a team.

  • Bigs in School - A weekly mentoring program in which your employees meet with their mentee matches during lunch or afterschool in a structured and supervised setting at a nearby school. The match meets for an hour each week to complete homework and participate in interactive and enriching activities that encourage healthy youth development and foster greater employee satisfaction.
  • Beyond School Walls - Every other week we transport Littles (elementary/middle school age) to your corporation for supervised 1.5 hour mentoring.
  • Workplace Mentoring - Your employees mentor high school students at your workplace in long-term relationships. This program is designed to broaden youth’s exposure to career opportunities and develop critical job skills. Matches meet once a month for 4 hours.

How You Can Help

We can only do our work with the generous support of our community: individual donors, corporate partners and grant funders. Each one-on-one match costs approximately $2,000 to support for a year. It’s a lot of money but the gains are worth it and every dollar helps.

We have a huge waiting list. Your support helps us to get kids off the waitlist and into productive mentoring relationships that can change their lives forever.

We need every bit of help we can get to help our kids and support positive role modeling for youth who need the presence of another pair of caring, responsible eyes on them to reach their fullest potential. Our waiting list is large. The need is great. Each match costs approximately $2,000 a year  to support.  Every dollar is needed and is greatly appreciated.  Help change a child’s life for good. Please donate now.

Bowl for Kid's Sake

Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a super fun way to give your organization a team building event that’s a blast, easy to do and helps kids continue on a positive path. Each year employee teams across Maryland come together to have fun and raise money to support Big Brothers Big Sisters as we change how children grow up! It only takes a little bit of effort to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success. Be a fundraiser. Be a donor. Be a bowler! It's easy, just follow these four steps:

  1. Register your team (6 people per team).
  2. Set a team fundraising goal. We suggest $1,200.
  3. Motivate your team to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y.
  4. HAVE FUN! Join us at the local bowling center, to celebrate your team's success!

Our next Bowl for Kids' Sake event will take place in spring 2018. Keep an eye out for more information.
